RELIEVING UNEMPLOYMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The unemployment problem is being effectively solved in this district. The Napier Borough Council has engaged ten returned soldiers who were without work, and in Hastings a sum of £lOOO has been voted to provide work for those unfortunately situated. In addition the Minister of Public Works (Hou. J. G. Coates), who is at present in Napier, stated to-day that arrangements have been made to employ 40 extra on the Eskdale section of the East Coast railway. These men -will be sent out on Monday and all cases in which distress was reported will thus be dealt with. CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT. Dunedin. June 23. Edward Hedley Kitchener Hughes, a young man employed in the Post Office, was charged in the Police Court this morning with having stolen £lOOO, Uie property of the New Zealand Government. He was remanded on bail for seven days.
