LOSSES AT CARDS.
A THOUSAND A MINUTE. CHARGE OF FRAUD FAILS. London, May 23. Charged on a year-old warrant with conspiracy to obtain between £25,000 and £30,000 from David Hall, Charles Lawson, aged 45, described as a farmer, was discharged by the magistrate, at Marylebone Police Court. Lawson lived at the Ritz Hotel, in Paris, and it was alleged that he was connected with three Australians, McNally, Dean and Dudley, who have already been sen- [ tencerj to penal servitude on the charge lof intent to defraud Hall. I Tfie alleged fraud followed on a card I game at Dudley’s flat, when it was /said, Lawson won £12,000 in 12 mini utes. Hall paid £5OOO by cheque on account, and later on, learning that Dean had paid part of the balance, paid Dean the amount. Counsel for -the defence submitted that no ease had been made out, and •quoted from the evidence o-f an Eastbourne gentleman, who was also alleged to have, been defrauded, yet he was satisfied that everything connected | with the game of cards was fair and square, and was compelled to testify only because of police pressure. |
