WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) June 22. Mr. D. Griffiths, of. Tikdrangi. whilst riding home on a bicycle . from the football match on Saturday last, met with a painful accident, through .being run into by a motor-cycle opposite Mr. D. Alexders, On hearing the motor cycle coming, along Mr. Griffiths juril[>ed off to get out of the road, but wae too late- Mr. Griffiths sustained concussion and a broken nose and severe shock. Mr. Fred Taylor found Mr. Griffiths unoonscione and conveyed him to a private hospital. The motor cyclist did not think fit to stop, but left the injured man on the road. The Waitara Troop of the 2nd Queen Alexandra Regiment are having their seven., days’ continuous drill this week under the command of Lieut. . Jaggs. The instruction is being given by Sergt.Major Bell. The death occurred at Te-puke on Saturday last of Mr. Geo. Shippen, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. C. Ulander, of Waitara. The deceased suffered from spinal meningitis" “during war service, and in an illness since had to have his leg amputated. Much sympathy is felt for the wife and relatives. The specie! meeting of .business men to confer on a course of action to expand business and “boosti’ Waitara-gen-erally. was held on Tuesday evening last. It was decided that a booklet be printed setting forth the various shopping places and the facilities ottered to purchasers. There was a further suggestion to form a Retailers’ Association where the introduction of cash trading would be brought forward, J hus eliminating the possibility of bad debts. Another proposition brought forward was to hold a carnival week the first week in December, the funds to be distributed amongst various institution A A eom : mittee representative of -each business was set up to arrange for a publicity campaign. The Retailers’ Association was formed, and Mr. J. Parry elected president. June 23. The annual meeting of the AnglicanChurch parishioners at Tikorangi was presided ove- by the vicar (Rev. G. H. Gavin). Officers for thq ensuing year were elected as follow:—Committee, Messrs. T. Mackenzie’. C. Sarten, J. Paulger, J. 'Foreman. Rolfe (treasurer). H. Foreman (representative on central executive), and L. Faull (district warden and secretary). A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Jarties Hine' for his past services in connection with church ’ work, and regret was expressed at his severance from the local'church. The Waitara Fire Board held its
annual meeting on Thursday evening, Mr. J. Blair presiding. The matter of an auxiliary pipe line at the intake was discussed, and it was de. eided to ask the borough overseer and a councillor to meet the Fire Board chairman and brigade superintendent to go into ways and means of getting continuous water pressure whilst the intake is being cleaned at intervals. It was decided that the officers of the brigade in future be paid the following rates of remuneration:— Superintendent, £lO 10s a year; deputy superintendent, £5 ss; custodian, £7 7s; firemen, £1 per man (boot money). Mr. A. W. Ogle was appointed chairman for the year.
