KAPONGA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A very pleasant evening was spent at the Parish Hall on Monday evening last, ' the occasion being a welcome social tea- ■ dered to the Rev. Solomon, who is taking charge of this parish while the Rev. C. Palmer is in England. There was a large attendance, and all present entered with spirit into the entertainment of the evening—progressive euchre. Mr. Geo. Death (late of Kaponga), who is back on a short visit, demonstrated that he has not forgotten his euchre lessons, by carrying off the prize for men, while Miss E. Melville secured that for the ladies. When the cards were finished, supper was handed round, after which Messrs. Grace and Dagg, churchwardens, extended to the guest of the evening the cordial greetings of the parishioners, expressing the hope that the reverend gentleman’s stay in Kaponga would be a happy one. Mr. Solomon, in reply, expressed his gratitude to those present for the hearty reception accorded to him. He had heard much of the hospitality of the people of Kaponga, and what he had heard was proved by the gathering that night. He hoped that in the near future he would know personally every member of his congregation, and would take the earliest opportunity of calling on them. He did not wish to see the congregation grow too suddenly, as that might not be a good sign, but what he did wish for was to see a steady growth. He again thanked those present for the hearty reception given him, and expressed regret that Mrs. Solomon was prevented from being present. A most enjoyable evening, was concluded by a short dance, the music being provided by Mrs. .McCarty, Mr. Soulless, Miss Bennie and Mr. Lyajl, while a song (Mr. Harris) and humorous recitation (Mr. Chadwick) added to the success of the evening.
