BATTLE OF MINERS.
FOURTEEN MEN KILLED STRIFE IN AMERICA By Telegraph.—Proas Assn. —Copyright. Received June 22, 8.30 p.m. New York, June 21. At Herrin, Illinois, fourteen men were killed, two are dying and a score were seriously wounded in a battle between coal miners and mine guards lasting four hours. The mine since the strike was being operated by non-union labor. Five thousand strikers stormed the mine stockade, and firing began. The guards were the operatives of a private detective agency, and because of their many casualties they hoisted the white flag. The miners demanded the cessation of operations and the surrender - of the mine, and to this the mine operatives acceded. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
