AUSTRALIAN TIMBER.
INDUSTRY BEING STIFLED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 22, 9.35 p.m. Sydney, June 22. A deputation from the associated jpountry sawmillers asked the Tariff Board for increased duty on foreign timhara. stating that half the sawmills in New South Wales are at present idle and the rest might have to close shortly as the timber is being stifled by cheap importations, the result of inadequate tariff protection. The deputation added that Baltic and Oregon could be landed at Armidale, 400 miles from the seaport, at a cost 20 per cent, less than the timber could be produced locally. The deputation decided to forward concrete proposals regarding the required tariff alterations to the board for presentation to the Minister. — Gable Assn.
