Coming down the road in a gig without lights, they were met by a motor-cycle ridden by one Smith. A collision occurred, and Smith had an arm broken and was still in hospital. Accused said he thought he would get home before dark, and was within 100 yards of his gate when the collision occurred. The magistrate: “You chaps deserve all you get.” He added that accused might have been in the dock on a charge of manslaughter. The people of the district were absolutely negligent of the lighting laws. He did not say this particularly in the case of the present accused, but he was going to make it too expensive for anyone to drive without lights. He was determined to put the nuisance down. He would go to the full extent of the by-laws before he stopped. Willing was fined £3, with costs 7s. RAILWAY CROSSING CASE. W. Blennerhassett pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a horse and cart over a railway crossing at a speed greater than a walking pace. STRATFORD COURT At the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, Mr. A. Coleman drew the attention of the magistrate to the delay in the service of summonses from the Court. He said the delay was caused by the fact that the bailiff was detained for two or three days a week in the Court office relieving the clerk of the Court, who had to attend at the Eltham Court. The magistrate (Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M.) said the matter had his sympathy. He was of opinion that Stratford was entitled to the full-time service of the clerk of the Court. The fact that Mr. Ching had removed to Hawera had somewhat complicated the case. If Mr. Coleman put the matter in writing, His Worship would be pleased to place the case before the Under-Secretary for Justice, with a view to having the matter remedied. Mr. Coleman intimated that he would adopt this course. STRATFORD CABARET.
