TAUPO’S ANXIETY.
SHOCKS CREATE ALARM. KO DAMAGE REPORTED. By Telegraph.—Presi Association. Rotorua, Last Night. A special reporter visited Wairekei, Tau« po, Oranui and the Waioruru Valley today. Oranui is almost deserted, and the whole of the working Maori miUhands have left for. Mokai. The earth in the Oranui Valley is full of small Vertical fissures, though the country formation is friable pumice aglomerate. The shocks in the valley were very severe, and were accompanied by alarming sounds. Though much apprehension is felt, no damage has been done, save a few bottles and crockery broken. The seat of the trouble is felt to be on the Wairakei-Oaru-nui line. The lake is low, owing to lack of rain and no snow-water. The net results, save “nerves,” are merely negligible. Small and unimportant subsidences are reported on the western arm of the lake, but nothing of a magnitude that would justify the word “earthquake.”
