IMPROVING STREETS.

NEW PLYMOUTH WORKS. THE MOST IMPORTANT TASKS. In dealing with the allocation of the £lO,OOO portion of -the £42,000 loan set aside for street works, the borough manager (Mr. F. T. Bellringer) states in his monthly report to the Borough Council:— It was intended to utilise any available balance of the £lO,OOO street loan to continue the asphalting of the footpath on the north side of Devon Street to the Henui bridge, thus completing Devon Street from the Post Office to the bridge. At that time it was not anticipated that sufficient money would be available. It has, however, since been found that sqme of the estimates of the uncompleted works were rather on the high side and that not only will there be sufficient available for this work, the estimated cost of which is £l9O, but that £202 19s 2d will be available for other works. There are innumerable paths upon which this amount could be well spent, but I suggest that the following are perhaps the moat important: Courtenay Street—Asphalting path on north side between Liardet Street and Currie Street, estimated cost £6O. This path is on a steep grade and is subject to frequent scouring and is a continuous source of expense. Watson Street —Kerbing and channelling patlr on west side between Lemon and Leach Streets. This also is a steep grade and is subject to scouring. Estimated cost £2O. Eliot Street. —Completing the kerbing and channelling on both sides from Devon to Gill and from Devon to Courtenay. Estimated cost £lO5. This street carries a very large pedestrian traffic and the footpaths are worn down almost to the level of the side channels. If the above works are position in regard to the balance of the loan would be as follows: Available balance, £392 19s 2d. Footpaths—Devon Street to Henui Bridge, £190; Courtenav Street, £6O; Watson Street, £2O; Eliot Street, £105; contingencies, £l7 19s 2d; total, £392 19s 2d.
