A Brisbane cable reports the death of the Hon. Sir Robert Philp, K.C.M.G.. one of the founders of Burns, Philp and Co. He first entered Parliament in 1886, and. after holding several portfolios became Premier in 1899, and again in 1908-9. He was 71 years of age at the time of his death.
Mr. J. D. Sole has severed his connection with the firm of Archibald Clark iind 'Sons and proposes taking a rest for a few months before again entering in business. Mr. Sole had been associated with the firm for 17 years, 15 of which he occupied the position of manager of the New Plymouth branch. Mr. F. C. Kelly, of the staff of the Herald, leaves New Plymouth shortly to take up a temporary position on the staff of a Winnipeg (Canada) paper and hopes later to go to England. On Saturday he was fare welled by his colleagues, who presented him with a travelling rug.
A Christchurch message states that Mr. Hugh Cassidy, who was associated with coaching in Canterbury and the West Coast for nearly fifty years, died at his home at Springfield on Saturday morning after an illness of a few days. He established the firm of Cassidy Bros., coach proprietors, on the West Coast, in 1873.
