Constable W. Butler, of the New Plymouth police force, is at present at Featherston on holiday leave.

An Auckland telegram reports the death of Mr. Peter Dignan, aged 76, exMayor of Auckland, and for many years a City Councillor. He took a keen interest in public affairs. Major W. P. Foley, M.C., second in command of the Queen Alexandra’s 2nd Mounted Rifles Regt., was successful in passing his examination for Lieut.Colonel, the examination ‘being’ held in Palmerston North on June 14.

The deata occurred on Thursday in a private hospital in "Wellington of Mr. C. A. Rowlandson, a wellknown Sydney publisher, after an operation for appendicitis. Mr. Rowlandson, with his wife and three children, had been visiting America for his health, and as he was returning caught a chill on the steamer and went ashore at “Wellington for an operation. Mr. Rowlandson had long been connected with the New South Wales Bookstall Company.

Mr Ewen A. Campbell, who is probably tlie oldest surviving settler ’n Wanganui, celebrated his 79th birthday on Tuesday. Mr. Campbell, who is the president of the Wanganui Jockey Club, and chairman of directors of the Wanganui Meat Freezing Company, in spite of his advancing years, still displays more vigor than the average man in the fifties.
