The bookmakers’ association sent a deputation to the Attorney General (Mr. Robinson) asking for an amendment of the law, according to the ruling of the courts, which makes beta paid by cheque recoverable. Mr. Robinson expressed himself as sympathetic, but asked the deputation to remember that other members of the Government had not had an opportunity of discussing the matter. He concluded by saying that it seemed to him personally most improper for a man in full possession of his senses when he mad? a bet to attempt to recover the money when he lost. He wohld refer the matter to Cabinet.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable As-sn.
