At a conference betwee cattle-owners and Government representives, to devise methods of eradicating tic-infected North Coast areas, Mr. Valder, Under-Secretary for Agriculture, stated tbit since 1906 the Government’s efforts to ombat the pest had cost £lOO,OOO, and tb position was no better than when they sorted. Continued spending on present line would be a further waste of money.
Other speakers attrib ted the failure to farmers not reporting he presence of the pest and falling back -i the efforts of the department. Three-fourths of tl cattle in the Tweed district were affecte/by tick, and the pest has now been founcjutside the proclaimed areas. It was claicd the United States had proved the eradicable by systematic dipping, id that it was controllable here with pper co-operation between farmers and t department.—Ausu-N.Z. Cable Assn.
