BURGLAR IN A BANK.
ASSAULT ON THE MANAGER. THE INTRUDER GETS AWAY. INCIDENT AT THE BLUFF. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. The Bluff premises of the Bank of New Zealand were entered last night during the temporary absence of the manager, Mr. W. G. Mann, who sleeps above the office. When the manager returned, about 11.30 p.m., his efforts to open the front door were resisted by an intruder, who struck Mr. Mann a severe blow on the forehead with a weapon, which was afterwards found on the footpath and identified as a plumber’s lead-beater. Mr. Mann’s call for assistance was heard by a constable at the Post Office, a short distance away. The constable hurried to the bank, but the burglar had then disappeared up a right-of-way. An examination of the premises showed that a small sum in loose cash had been taken from clothes hanging in the manager’s room; otherwise all was in order. Mr. Mann had to receive medical atten>< tion.
