NEW SCHOOL SCHEME

PROPOSAL FOR MOTUROA. REPORT TO THE BOARD. A report on the proposed school at was presented to the Education Board yesterday the board’s architect (Mr. C. H. Moore). The report stated:— “I have gone carefully into this question as instructed, and submit a plan, with the estimates, of a permanent class-room of “the same floor space as the department’s portable building. The department’* portable building of the smallest size (17ft. 2in. x 16ft. 9in., with a porch 17ft. 2in. x sft. sin.) would cost £-500, which would probably be reducible to £485 after the erection of the first one. A permanent building erected in wood with iron roof will cost not more than £414. I would point out the disadvantages of putting up a permanent building the same size as the department’s portable building. This would be principally owing to the size of the class-room being on too small a scale, yet not too small for a moveable and extensible class-room; therefore, it is rather difficult to make a comparison between the two.

“There can be no question in regard to the need of a moveable and extensible building up to grade 3, and even up to any grade if necessary. The feasibility of buildings of this description was pointed out long before the department’s portable building came along, but the mode of construction should be very much simplified, and would yet have a better appearance than the portable building now before the boards. By our own plan we can save one-fifth of the cost of the original construction and half the cost of labor in dismantling and re-erecting, and, as I have stated, construct a building of better appearance and one really easily moveable. What I would respectfully suggest is to stress this to the department and ask them not to force on to boards a structure that is not going to fulfil the conditions as set out.”

The report was referred to the committee appointed to deal with the matter for their report.
