DIRECT SHIPMENTS TO TARANAKI
The executive of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerre is doing all in its power to obtain direct shipments of goods from overseas to New Plymouth, for the benefit of the whole of Taranaki. The Chamber is not seeking for isolated shipments, mainly arranged lor by one or inore importers, but the aim is to secure a regular service, at stated intervals, so as to give all importers, merchants and others the opportunity of having goods sent direct to the seaport of Tarana.ki. .An initial success lias been achieved, as the result of which a C- and D. liner is expected to load goods in London for New Plymouth direct about the middle of September, so that all concerned at. thLs end may now make arrangements to have goods shipped by that vessel. In some measure this opportunity wilt be a test of whether the Taranaki importers are in earnest over making the best use of direct shipment. Obviously, unless they back up the executive of the Chamber by ordering goods to be forwarded by direct shipment, the efforts lot the Chamber pill not be effective. !There should be no question of there ■being sufficient demand for this direct service to justify a regular time-table being drawn up, and, considering the manifest advantages gained, importers i should make a point of co-operating with the Chamber to the fullest extent, and promptly. The executive deserves great commendation for its perseverance in this and other matters, but on the importers must lie the onus of making the new departure a success—-it is their interest to do so.
