CULT OF THE JERSEY.
THE HOLLY OAK. SALE. SOME GOOP PRICES. That Taranaki is still recognised as the home of the Jersey was evidenced by the large crowd that attended the third annual sale held by Mr. J. Hale, the well-known Taranaki breeder, at his homestead, “Holly Oak,” Avenue Road, New Plymouth, yesterday. The beautiful cattle submitted and the spirited biding show that those who did attend appreciated the fact that Taranaki is still justly entitled to the reputation she has gained in the past. Mr. Hale has for years past been building up mainly with a view to obtaining the best butter fat production, while at the same time paying due regard to breed type and character, and the result of this was shown by the keen bidding and the high prices obtained for the cattle, despite the present financial stringency. Of the 33 submitted, all changed hands, the 19 heifers totalling 2258 guineas, an average of'll9 guineas, and the 14 bulls 718 guineas, an average of 51 guineas. The whole 33 lots realised 2976 guineas, an average of 90 guineas.
Top price was realised by the two-year-old heifer Holly Oaks Bonny, by Grannie’s Knight —Jersey Bank Treasure, which was purchased by Mr. S. C. Colmore Williams, of Dargaville, for . 230 guineas. This same buyer also secured a two-year-old heifer 'by the same ■ sire out of Sylph’s Maid for 206 gns., > whilst Mr. M. P. Reeve-Smith, of Aria, paid 201 gns. for a two-year-old heifer . by Exilium—Tuneful, and 180 gns. > for a two-year-old heifer by Beauty’s [ Beau—Katie’s Gem. Messrs. G. R. and H. Hutchinson, of Auckland, paid 193 gns. for a two-year-old Grannie’s Knight —Rose’s Glance heifer. A feature of the sale was the fact that bidders were present from all over the North Island and also from the South Island, ■ the bulk of the cattle being secured by ’ outsiders, particularly from Northern Wairoa and the King Country. The ! highest-priced 'bull was 100 gns., at i which the two-year-old Holly Oaks’ ‘ Superior Knight, by Grannie’s Knight— I Lady Superior, was bought by Mr. J. T. Shepherd, of Opunake. 1 The arrangements for the sale, which was conducted by Newton King, Ltd., were, as usual, of the high standard set • by North Taranaki auctioneers, the sale being held in a comfortably-seated mar- ■ quee. Mr. K. F. Kirk, who wielded > the hammer, was in excellent form. Details: — HEIFERS. Holly Gaks Lass, by Beauty’s Beau —Lucky Lass, calved January, 1920; A. Hale (Hillsborough), 82 gns.
