MAIN ROADS BILL.

ALLOCATION OF THE TYRE TAX. EGMONT COUNTY’S ATTITUDE. The Main Roads Bill was briefly discussed at the meeting of the Egmont County Council yesterday, the subject being introduced by a communication from the Waimea County Council asking support to a resolution urging that the tyre tax should be equitably allocated between all counties and Road Boards (where the Counties Act was not in force), and made available during the current year for the maintenance, repair and control of all the main roads used for motor traffic.

; The chairman said that a very impor- : tant conference had been held in Wellingi ton recently, when the Main Roads Bill i was discussed. Unfortunately, probably I because of council was not a member of the association, they were not represented. He thought they should ask Mr. O; Hawken, M.P., to watch their interests when the Main Roads Bill came up. He moved that the council support the resolution. Councillor Campbell seconded. Councillor Gibson pointed out that there was a danger that the tax might be allocated to the main arterial roads indicated by the Minister and that their main roads might not 'be considered. The chairman pointed out that as a result of the conference the proposal had been entirely altered, and there was no danger of their main roads being overlooked.

Councillor Trotter considered that the money received from the tyre tax should be to pay off the antecedent liability.

The chairman said that any money received from tyre tax should be devoted to tar-sealing the roads and assisting in their maintenance, thereby relieving the rates. The resolution was carried. Councillor Tosland then moved that Hawken, M.P., be asked to safeguard the interests of the council in regard to the allocation of the tyre tax, pointing out that the main road earned r great deal of round-the-mountain traffic, and was a main arterial road, and would contribute a considerable amount towards the tyre tax. This was seconded by Councillor Trotter and carried.
