THE STATE ORCHESTRA By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, June 12. Mr. Frank Clarke, Minister of Works in Victoria, and chairman of the Melbourne guarantee fund, discussed the question of the State Orchestra with Mr. Bruntnell. He stated Melbourne would substantially increase its guarantee if Mr. Verbrugghen returned to conduct the orchestra. DEFENCE RETRENCHMENT. Sydney, June 12. Compensation to the personnel of the defences forces compulsorily retired exceeds £250,000. PAY OF PILOTS. Sydney, June 12. Mr. Justice Powers dismissed an application by the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia, that Jhe Court should strike out the whole of the first section of the plaint dealing with shipowners and the claim to compel pilotage-authorities to pay a pilot an annual salary of £BOO, and to insert in its place a claim that the State should pay to certain defined pilots at the fouixports only an annual salary of £BOO.
