RECOVERY OF BETS.

AN ACTION IN MELBOURNE. ENGLISH ACT QUOTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 11, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, June 11. As none of the bookmakers against whom claims were made for the return of cheque bets have refunded the amounts, writs are to be issued for their recovery. The claims were made on behalf of the late Mr. Richard Garland in relation to the Victorian Racing Club’s spring meeting in 1918. The amounts vary from £)5O to £B5O, and the total amount involved is nearly £6OOO. If the case goes to court it will be fought collectively, and to this end the bookmakers are establishing a defence fund. A message from Melbourne last week stated: Consternation has been caused among bookmakers through the action of a firm of solicitors in claiming from a number of bookmakers repayment to an estate of money paid by a bettor in cheques in settlement of lost bets. The action is taken under the English Gaming Act, under which it has, been decided that bets that have been paid by cheque are recoverable.
