EXORBITANT RENTS.
POSITION IN By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, June 9. The hearing of an application for a reduction of rent in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday led to light being thrown on the practice of sub-letting and the position of sub-tenants in the city. Counsel asked where was it possible in Wellington to get a seven-roomed house for a rent of £2 5s per week. Another solicitor said he knew of a house which had been divided into flats for which £5 each was being asked. He also knew of a young man paying £2 ,a week for two rooms and a kitchenette. The Magistrate: “Well, he’s a fool to pay it.” Counsel said the man seemed quite contented and to regard himself as lucky to get the room at the price. The Magistrate: “I am waiting until I get a case of a shop girl who is being forced to pay £1 or 25s for a single room and I will deal with the matter pretty thoroughly.”
