PERSONALS. Miss Helen Wilson has returned from Wellington. Mrs. Paul returned from Blenheim last night. Miss Wade (Mesopotamia) arrived in New Plymouth yesterday. Miss Joan Esse has returned from Auckland. Miss Eleanor Campbell has returned from Wellington. > • • • • Mrs. Frank Blundell has returned from Wellington. Mrs. T. P. Anderson has returned from Wellington. * • • • Mrs. D. Cook, who has been the guest of Mrs. W. H. Moyes, returned to Auckland last night. The Winter Club held another of its dances last Tuesday, and it was another success. Mrs. Fairfax Chomeley was hostess at a most enjoyable fancy dress dance at her residence, Bell Block, last Saturday. Miss Anderson, daughter of the Hon. E. J. Anderson, has been visiting New Plymouth. The engagement is announced of Miss Eileen Lye, of New Plymouth, to Mr. W. W. Diggle, of Dannevirke. Mrs. Esdale, who has been visiting her sister, Miss Young, returned to Auckland last night. * • * * The ladies’ committee are already get- < ting busy over the Old Boys’ Ball, which < is to be held on July 7. Miss M. St. John Smith (Auckland) has been appointed secretary to Miss Rosina Buckmann during her tour in the Dominion. Miss Mason (Australia), who has been the guest of Mrs. F. Mason (Westown), left yesterday for Wellington to return to Sydney. Mr, and Mrs. C. M. Cresswell, and their youngest son, and Miss Smith, of Taumarunui, who were the guests of Mrs. and Mr. J. B. Cresswell, returned to Wanganui on Monday. A number of young people gave Mrs. Harry Fookes a very pleasant surprise party on Thursday. The drawing room was turned out for jazzing, and a very gay time was spent. The performance of the “Dress Rehearsal” by the Strella Amateurs will afford laughter and merriment to all. Although the performers are all ladies, the young men of New Plymouth will, doubtless, when they witness the artistic and pleasing production of their fair sisters, all be keen on joining the “Strellas” in their next production. CLARKE MEMORIAL HOSTEL. The monthly meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors, was held at the hostel on Thursday. Present: Mesdames E. A. Walker (chair), W. Ambury, Blundell, Alexander, Mills, List, Misses Hodder, Harrison, and Roughton. Apologies were received from Mesdames C. H. Weston, A. Ambury, and MacDiamid. The hostel secretary reported that 43 women and girls had been in residence during the month. Fewer holiday makers were coming during the winter, but despite this fact, the hostel was continuing to pay its way. a The home nursing classes under Miss Gee continued to be well attended. These lectures, which were demonstrated, were followed with the keenest interest and enthusiasm. An opportunity is given to girls to bring written quetions next Tuesday. The board expressed the hope that the Tuesday evening gathering should continue throughout the winter. A letter was read from the national office (Sydney) asking that a report and balance sheet be forwarded through the N.Z. National Field Office at an early date. The local association was also asked to send a delegate to the convention to be held at Melbourne in October. It was decided to ask Miss Birch, N.Z. National Field Secretary, to act as the representative.
