RAILWAY OFFICERS.

AFFILIATION WITH LABOR ALLIANCE. PROPOSAL BEFORE CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. ■ The annual conference of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute was continued to-day. The chair was occupied by Mr. J. R. Robertson, the president. Discussion was resumed on the Auckland remit advocating the setting up of a permanent tribunal to deal with wages and conditions of works, similar to the temporary conciliation council that was set up after the 1920 railway strike. The xgmit was passed. Another Auckland remit, providing for grading positions throughout the Dominion, caused a long discussion, delegates from each district alleging that the need for such a reform was creating great dissatisfaction and discontent. It was decided to ask each branch to furnish the executive committee with a report within three weeks’ time. A sub-com-mittee was appointed to draft suitable instructions to branches in order that full effect might be given to the conference’s instructions in the matter,.

Remits were considered from Dunedin ; North Canterbury and North Otago urging closer relationship with other State employees’ organisations. It was agreed that continued efforts be made to create as good an understanding as possible between State employees’ organisations, so that whenever possible all societies may benefit by acting in unison.

“That the executive council give serious consideration to taking a ballot of the whole membership of the Railway Officers* Institute on the question of linking up with the Alliance of Labor,” was the subject of remits from Palmerston North . and Canterbury. The discussion was proceeding when the conference rose.
