APPALLING HARDSHIPS. FAMILIES ALMST STARVING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, June 8. The executive of the Miners’ Federation has issued a statement that wages are so low on many of the coal fields and employment so irregular, that workers and their families are undergoing appalling hardships. Owing to the refugees flocking into Glasgow there is some difficulty in finding accommodation. Appeals are being made to the public to provide clothing, as many of the women and children are poorly clad. Received June 9, 5.5 p.m. London, June 8. Mr. Stephen Walsh, member of the House of Commons for Ince, Lancashire, addressing a Labor conference, pointed out that thousands of miners’ families • are almost starving and are forced to seek poor law relief. The federation protested against the decision of some districts to refuse unemployment payments because the miners refused to accept below district rates.
