TARANAKI JEWLLERS.

THE ANNUAL MEETING. The fourth annual meeting of the Taranaki branch of the New’ Zealand Jewellers’ Association was held at Stratford last week, and was attended by jewellers from every town in the province. The president, Mr. J. Brunette (Hawera) presided. The business done was mostly of a ( routine nature, concerning matters affecting the trade. Mr. Sargent (Hawera), the official delegate to this year’s conference of New Zealand jewellers, held at Palmerston North, recently submitted an interestreport of the business transacted there. A discussion followed on the proposal of that conference to subsidise the establishment of a branch school at the Wellington Technical College for the purpose of teaching returned soldiers and civilian youths the trade of watch and clock repairing, etc. This proposal has been interesting the various branches of the New Zealand association for some time past, owing to the limited number of youths who were apprenticing themselves to the trade of recent years, most members realising that the establishment of a school of this nature for the benefit of returned soldiers and civilian youths would be preferable to the importing of artisans from other countries, as seemed imminent in the future. The majority of those present favored the scheme to subsidise the school, and a sub-committee was appointed to go into the necessary details and report to a later meeting of the branch. A new departure in regard to the election of officers for the ensuing year was to elect the executive from the president’s town only, so as to secure a ready quorum for meetings, etc., with a representative in each of the provincial towns. / Mr. Gaffaney (Stratford) was unanimously elected president; Mr. J. Petrie, bon. treasurer; Mr. W. T. Beagley, hon. secretary; executive—president, secretary, treasurer, and Messrs. J. K. Stone end J. Petrie, senr. At the conclusion of the meeting the •Stratford members entertained the visitors to afternoon tea.
