OUTLOOK FOR FARMERS.

TIDE DEFINITELY TURNED. SOUTHERN FARMERS CONFER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The annual conference of the North Canterbury district of the New Zealand Farmers’ L’nion opened to-day. The president’s address covered the principal operations of the year. He referred to the drop in meat and wool, and the gambling in land and its consequent results when the slump came. They had much to thank the Governmen for in aiding anyone who had a chance of pulling through. The Premier was always optimistic as to the future, and his optimism was justified, as the tide had now definitely turned. While the union had been of great assistance, farmers regretted that only five per cent, of the latter assisted with a subscription. He urged primary and secondary producers to come together for mutual benefit and protection. A remit from the central branch and another from the Omihi branch relating to taxation were referred to the Dominion conference. A remit from Darefield suggesting that the Government be urgently requested to grant farmers relief in regard to taxation on mortgage was carried. It was decided to draw the attention of the Government to the prices being charged for Nauru phosphates by certain firms, and to request the Governmen to furnish details regarding price, supply and distribution, A remit urging a more effective system of inspection of fertilisers manufactured in the Dominion was approved. Some discussion took place on the alleged high price of binder twine, and the matter was referred to the executive to deal with. It was agreed that an allowance should be made to farmers on wool packs, and that the executive go into the question of the grading of cream.
