RIFLE SHOOTING.
PATEA ASSOCIATION’S MEETING. The sixth annual meeting of the Patea Rifle Association was held at the local range on Saturday. A tricky wind blew throughout the day, militating against high scoring. Nevertheless there tvere some excellent scores reglsteted. The entries, though not quite so large in number as last year, were good, four out of five previous winners of the championship being present, viz., Rfmn. Broughton, Roots, King and Palmer, Marsh being the only absentee The championship was won by Rfmn. J. G. Ritchie, of the Hawera Rifle Club, who, although but 18 years of age, shot consistently throughout the meeting, outdistancing all competitors. This young shot, who is on the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Hawera, should be heard of in the shooting world in the near future. The runners-up were Rfmn. Hope, of Waverley, and Hfmn. Taylor, of New Plymouth. The winners of the various matches were: Wanganui match (7 shots at 200 yards) : T. Marrett 35 (New Plymouth). Taranaki match (7 shots at 300 yards) : C. Cross (Hawera) 34. Wellington match (scores in matches 1 and 2 to count) : G. Smith (Kaponga) 66 and J. Ritchie (Hawera) 66 divided the first prize. G. Cross (Hawera) also scored 66. Manawatu match: E. Ingram (Levin) 49. Auckland match (scores in matches 2 and 3 to count) : D. Seannell (Hawera). Grand aggregate: J. Ritchie (Hawera) 113, belt and S. Whiteford’s gold medal and £lO, 1; G. Taylor (New Plymouth) 112, £5, 2; S. Hare (Waverley) 112, £4, 3. Tyro aggregate: W. Irvine (Waverley) 1. Teams’ challenge cup: Hawera A 551, £9; Linton R.C. (Palmerston North), £5; Wanganui A, 526, 30s; Kaponga A, 526, 30s.
