DISTRICT NEWS.

RIVERLEA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A social to welcome the Rev. and Mrs. Rendon was held in the hall on May 17, when the following programme was rendered:—Hymn, Sunday school children; pianoforte duet, Misaes Edith Hey and Olive Webby; song, Mr. Reid; recitation, Miss M. Larkin; song, Mr. W. Hey; recitation, Elsie Webby; trio, Misses O. Webby, E. Nickel and E. Hey; recitation, Mr. A. E.zSadler; recitation, Mr. B Hey; recitation, Master E. Webby. During the evening several parlour games were played and greatly enjoyed by all. Mr. J. Webby, in a neat speech, welcomed the Rev. Kendon to Riverlea, and hoped his stay would be enjoyable and beneficial both to himself and the congregation. The annual meeting of the Farmers’ Union was very poorly attended, only five members being present, the following officers being elected:—President, Mr. B. L. Webby; secretary, Mr. A. C. Mills. It is a pity the farmers do not take more interest in the union, seeing the good work that is being done by it right through New Zealand. A working •bee was held in the school paddock on Wednesday, when the following men came with their teams:—Messrs. B. L. Webby, J. Stubbs, J. Webby, H. Johns, W. Hey, F. Schmidt and A. E. Soxller. Mre. generously; supplied morn-

ing and afternoon tea to the workers. The milking season is nearing an end. most of the herds being only milked once a day. Owing to the wet season there has been an abundance of grass, and ■with the hay and root crops that are about, I think most of the cows will be well wintered this year. , The weekly practice dances are still being well attended, and the young people hope to be able to raise enough mqmey to have the electrio light installed in the dressing -rooms before long. The timber for lining the hall has been seasoned, and is now stocked in the supper room in readiness for the willing workers who have promised to put it up, so ere long onr hall will be quite up-to-date. The meeting of housebolders has been fixed for June 19. when it is to be hoped the parents will roll up in full force and let the committee see that they take a little interest in the school.
