LICENSING COMMITTEE.
THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Licensing Committee was held at New Plymouth yesterday. Present: Messrs A. M. Mowlem, S.M. (chairman), F. C. J. Bellringer and W. Ambury. Licenses were dealt with as follows:—Royal Hotel, W. G. Emeny to E. C. Heel; Breakwater Hotel, E. O. Meredith (-subject to certain repairs being completed); Royal Hotel, E. C. Heel; Grosvenor Hotel, E. M‘Ginty; Criterion Hotel, W. D. Graham; Terminus Hotel, F. C. Faber ; Red House Hotel, E. Whittle; Imperial Hotel, R. Barlow. The question of liability for repairs had arisen between the licensee and the owner of the White Hart Hotel, intimated Mr. McCormick, who represented the licensee. The repairs would be carried out if the committee wished. Mr. Bellringer commented on tile fire escapes, which he said should not be allox ’d to continxie in their present condition any longer. The chairman said the committee did not intend to be placed in the position of battledore and shuttlecock between the licensee and the owner. The application would be adjourned for four xveeks, by which time the committee would expect the repairs to be effected. Tiic application by J. H. Mills for an accommodation license for the Okato Hotel was granted on the conditions thatothe bottom sashes of the upstairs windows were made to open so that escape could be made in case of an outbreak of fire, and that the bathroom was improved An accommodation license was granted to F. C. Emery in respect to the Oakura Hotel, a renewal of a wholesale license to A. Goldwater, and a packet license to the Northern S;S. Co. in respect to the s.s. Rarawa.
