HOTEL MANAGEMENT.
WARNING AGAINST UNDESIRABLES. AFTER HOURS TRADING Tn reviewing the conduct of licensed premises in the New Plymouth district, Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M. (chairman of the TaranaKi Licensing Committee), said at the annual meeting of the committee yesterday that it had been reported that the r management during the last year had been satisfactory. The inspector of police had, however, brought under the notice of the committee the fact that since the repeal of a certain section of the Gaming Act reputed bookmakers had been permittee! to frequent licensed premises, apparently for the purpose of carrying on their unlawful business. The committee desired that the attention of licensees should be drawn to that statement and, further, expected that the licensees would use such endeavours as ought to keep their houses as free as possible from any suggestion of this kind. Evidence of after-hour trading being carried on, in some cases to a serious extent, was also commented upon by Mr. Mowlem. This position the licensing committee regarded with strong disapproval. Licensees should recognise that they were subject to liabilities as well as to benefits and should accordingly do their best to carry out the law. The committee expected that in future licensees would carry out the law as to the hour of closing and the proper hours for trade.
