ON GREAT BARRIER. WILTSHIRE FROM HOME. “IN GREAT DANGER.” FEW DETAILS RECEIVED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland. Last Night (12.40 a .mJ. News has just been received that the Federal liner Wiltshire (12.160 tons), which was due here at daybreak from Liverpool, is ashore at the Great Barrier. At 11.30 p.m she wirelessed: ** On Great Barrier reef; heavy list to starboard; 16 feet of water in No. 1 hold; danger imminent; now listing more and more.” At 11.40 p.m. the following wireless was received: “ In great danger. ’ ’ The Harbor Board’s tug is proteeeding to the scene.
FURTHER DETAILS. VESSEL IN GRAVE DANGER. EXPOSED TO THE GALE. STEAMERS HURRY TO RESCUE. Wellington, Last Night (1.25 a.m.). The Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department has received the following telegrams from the radio station at Auckland : At 1111 p.m.: ‘The following wireless was received from s.s. Wiltshire: ‘Heavy list to startboard; sixteen feet of water in No. 1 hold; danger imminent and serious; she is listing more and more.’ ” At 11.12 pjn.: “The sa. Wiltshire, bound from Panama to Auckland, sends out 5.0.5.; gone ashore on Barrier reef.” "• At 11.35: “The Wiltshire reports: ‘Send assistance at once; in grave danger? The Katoa and the Arahura started at midnight to assist the Wiltshire. The former is 25 miles and the latter 90 miles distant.” At 12.10 a.m.: “The Wiltshire advises the captain says he is not sure, as it is too dark to know, but thinks he is on the south end of Barrier Island.” At 12.22 a.m.: “Received the following from ba. Tasmania: *We are proceeding to the wrecked Wiltshire on Barrier Island, distant 300 miles from him? ” At 12.26 a.m.: “Received the following from the Wiltshire: ‘Nos. 1 and 2 holds full of water; ship very exposed to gale? ” At 12.30 am.: “Steamer Dundala advises she is proceeding south of Barrier Island; distance 80 miles.” The Wiltshire is one of the biggest liners trading to New Zealand, and is commanded by Captain Hayward. Recent Auckland papers state she was bringing cargo fro*n WW of England ports for discharge at Auckland. Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. No mention is made of the Wiltshire carrying immigrants or other passengers.
