Mr. H. J. Grayson, of Auckland, who has recently been appointed manager of the Taranaki branch of the Victoria insurance Co., Ltd., arrived in New Plymouth on Tuesday.
A Melbourne message reports the death of Dr. Leger Edson, formerly of New Zealand, and a Legislative councillor hi West Australia.
Mr. A. R. Mowlem (New Plymouth), Mr. B. M. Johns (New Plymouth), and Mr. M. Aitken (Egmont Village) have passed in all subjects in the first professional medical examination at the Otago Medical Schoo]. Mr. H. L. McGregor, who for the last ten years has been attached to the Wellington staff of the Bank of New South Wales, has received notice of his transfer as accountant to the Hawera branch. The staff met on Friday afternoon, and Mr. Paul, acting-manager, in a happy speech, expressed the pleasure of the staff at Mr. McGregor’s promotion, and handed him a token of their esteem.
“It is with regret that the executive committee has to record its sympathy in connection with the death of Mr. W. E. Percival (delegate for Inglewood),” states the annual report of the Taranaki Provincial War Relief Association. Mr. Percival was connected with the association and represented Inglewood practically from its inception. The late Mr. Percival was a staunch friend and did yeoman service in the cause of the returned soldiers in Taranaki.
His Honor, Mr. Justice , Sim, admitted Miss Agnes Russell Todd, Invercargill’s first lady solicitor, on Wednesday. Miss Todd is in the office of Mr. W. G. Tait, solicitor, Invercargill, on whose motion she was admitted. Mr. Justice Sim wished her all success in the profession. She is an ex-pupil of the Southland Girls’ High School, where she had an exceptionally brilliant career and she passed her finnl solicitor’s examination some time ago, having to wait until she attained her majority before being admitted. Miss Todd is probably the youngest woman solicitor in the Dominion.
Mr. Robert Duncan retired yesterday on superannuation from the position of Secretary for Marine. Mr. Duncan, who was appointed to that post in succession to the late Mr. George Allport, only a little over two yeaas ago, was born in Arbroath, Scotland, on December 31, 1857, being the son of Captain A. Duncan, a Scottish shipowner. He arrival! at Auckland in 1884, and became a chief engineer with the Northern .Steamship Company and the South Sea Island Mail Service. He was appointed a Government Inspector of Machinery at Dunedin in 1890, and became chief inspector in 1893, a position he retained up till the retirement of Mr. Allport at the end of 1919 L
