HINTS TO DAIRYMEN. AN EFFECTIVE DOUCHE. Every year numbers of cows are either 'partly or wholly ruined through misapplied douching. Douching, commonly spoken of as washing the cow out after calving, when practised by the trained veterinarian, is of undoubted value, but in the hands of the layman its utility becomes questionable, and in some cases becomes positively dangerous. By far the most popular douche at the present time is a solution of bichloride of mercury (blue tablets). It is a very irritating material, and not infrequently sets up inflammatory conditions, which eventually produce sterility in the cow. Apart from this, its value for this kind of work is quite questionable, because mercury tends to combine with the discharges, forming albuminate of mercury, an absolutely inert material possessing no antiseptic properties whatever. What has been said of blue tablets regarding their irritating properties similarly applies to lysol and carbolic acid. Both are dangerous unless skilfully used. to be of any value, must be done several times in twenty-four hours, a fact which is almost out of the question to the busy dairyman. Dr. Ring has solved the problem with hi® famous “abortoids.” These abortoids contain an antiseptic neither ‘"poisonous” nor “irritating,” and are. absolutely safe in the hands of the most inexperienced; their dost is low enough to be within the reach of all. Excepting in very bad cases, one “abortoid” is sufficient. They are sold in boxes of one dozen at ss. Every farmer should have these on hand. Send postal note for 5s to A. L. Hunter, P.O. Box 231, New Plymouth, sole distributing agent for Taranaki for all Dr. Ring’s Blue Cross Cattle Remedies.—Advt.
