IMPROVEMENTS WANTED. ATTITUDE OF DEPARTMENT. DECISIONS OF THE BOARD. A special meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held at New Plymouth last night, for the purpose of considering the question of accommodation at the New Plymouth schools. T'ljere were present: Messrs. P. J- H. White (chairman), H. Trimble, S. G. Smith, M.P., H. J. .Eaves, R. Masters, M.P., F. Hoskin, and R. J. Deare. The chairman, in explaining the object for calling the meeting, said the matter had arisen out of the deputation which had waited upon the Minister of Education (Hon. C. J. Parr) at Stratford. A letter had been received at last board, meeting from the department, containing the report of the departmental inspector of school buildings (Mr. Spencer), whereupon the Minister had been asked if this was to be considered as the department’s final reply. Mr. White said he had now received from the Minister, under date May 18, the following < telegram: — “Since my return I have considered your last telegram re accommodation in New Plymouth, and you will please accept the ■department’s letter of 24th April as reply to the deputation at Stratford. I desire, however, to add that there is fair chance next mcfrbh of education finance slightly improving, in which case I shall be pleased to put the application for a new building at Courtenay Street again before Cabinet. In the meantime it would be better for the 'board not to erect temporary room at the Central School, but to proceed in the matter of Motor ua immediately.” Continuing, the chairman said he had been asked to make an application for two movable schools at Moturoa. Permission had also l been granted to erect a new wing and one of the department’s movable buildings at the Central School out of their own building fund. Till these matters were dealt with, the department said, no other applications for accommodation could be entertained. In view, however, of a grant for the Courtenay Street school going through, permission to erect a movable builds ing at the Central School had been withdrawn, as Standard I at the Central School would go to the new Courtenay Street school, and thus relieve the position at the Central School to that extent. He was, how'ever, not prepared to instruct their architect to puloceed with the work of providing temporary accommodation at Moturoa on the lines suggested without calling a full meeting of the board to consider what should be laid before the department by the board in respect to the whole of the New Plymouth schools.

At this stage the board went 1 into committee to consider the question, and on - resuming the following resolutions passed in committee were confirmed : Moturoa: “That the architect bring down an estimate of the cost of temporary schools at Moturoa, as submitted by the. department, and a permanent school in wood, and the matter of communicating with the department be left in the hands of the chairman and Messrs. Smith and Deare.”—On the motion of Messrs. Masters and Lees. Courtenay Street: “That the board press for a grant for the new Courtenay Street school, and that, in view of the reduction in the prices of materials, the architect be instructed to prepare and submit fresh estimates for same.” —On the motion of Messrs. Smith and Trimble. Westown: “That a committee consisting of Messrs. White, Smith and Deare be set up to report on a suitable site, and that the question of making an application to the department for building a school be submitted to the board.” —On the motion of Messrs. Smith and Deare. Fitzroy: “That in view of the special request by the department that the question of Fitzroy proposed infant school be held over, the board accedes to the Request but desires to impress on the Minister that the need of this district with regard to extended school facilities is very urgent.”—On the motion of Messrs. Masters and Eaves. Central: “That application be made for the Minister’s consent as per letter of February 28 for remodelling" the Central School as per plans submitted.”— On the motion of Messrs. Smith and Deare. The Minister’s letter of the date referred to stated, inter alia: “No special grant can for the present be approved in connection with remodelling proposals, but if the board is prepared to provide the whole cost out of it? rebuilding* moneys, the Minister will give his consent in accordance with the provisions of the Education Amendment Act recently passed.”
