Mr. W. H. Preece, of New Plymouth, who recently underwent a serious operation, is making good recovery and is able to be about town.
At the University examination recently held at Dunedin, Air. Roy Whiteside, lately of Inglewood, was successful in passing in all the subjects of the first professional examination for the medical degree.
Mr. G. W. B. Lowson, the New Plymouth Harbor Board’s resident engineer, returned to New Plymouth on Saturday night after a visit to VVhangarei and Auckland, where he witnessed a demonstration with steam excavators, a laborsaving device which has recently had the consideration of the Harbor Board.
The Prime Minister (Mr. W. F. Massey) will be unable to come to New Plymouth next month to open the winter show, owing to his visit to the South Island. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., has now telegraphed the Prime Minister asking if it is at .all possible to arrange for the attendance of another Minister at the show.
A Levin message states that a wellknown settler and land owner, Air. Charles Bell, residing at Weraroa, was killed on Saturday night by being thrown from his horse, which , had bolted.
A Wellington telegram reports the death of Air. Edward John von Dadelszeu, aged 77, formerly Registrar -General and statistical officer for New Zealand. Air. von Dadelszen was educated at Oxford and came out to New Zealand in 1859. He was engaged in printing for Bishop Selwyn and Sir John Gorst in the early days, and went through exciting’ incidents in the Native troubles. He later joined the Government service and was compiler of the New Zealand Year Book for many years.
