BOROUGH COUNCIL. j (From Our Own Correspondent.) May 26. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Eltham Borough Council was held this evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. W. Tayler), Crs. Nairn, Clement, Cuff, Bridger, Fitzgerald, Thomas, Carter and Campbell. Messrs. W. Thorpe and Fary were granted permission to store skins in the borough. The Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote thanking the people of Eltham for contributing £45 to the Poppy Day celebrations. The town clerk explained that the coet of the new gas holder would be £5746 14s sd, and the finance committee recommended that steps be taken to obtain the approval of the ratepayers to raise a further loan of £lOOO for the purpose of making completion in the erection of same. The treasurer reported that £738 was received and £1673 19s Id expended durI ing April. ! In his report the poundkeeper stated that 51 head of cattle had been im- [ pounded in March, and 44 in April. Of i the latter number, 2 head were sold, the sale realising two shillings. The finance committee reported recommending :-r—That for extinguishing the antecedent liability, an annual recurring rate be struck; that application be made to the Bank of New Zealand for authority to borrow by way of overdraft £6OOO or any sum not exceeding that amount; that application be made to the Public Trustee for a .renewal of the £3BOO public hall, offices and library supplementary loan; that Messrs. O’Dea and Bayley be informed that the council I has no power to refund surplus pound ! moneys; that Mr. R. J. Belcher be grantI ed a refund of £1 12s 6d on account of ' impounding fees owing to misdescription in impounding notice.—Adopted. The town hall and pictures committee’s recommendations on several matters connected with the hire of the town hall were adopted. The works committee recommended that 200 yards of boulders be procured for hand breaking. In connection with this the clerk stated that the sum of £2400 would be available for public works. That a conference of the owners of land abutting the Mangawhero 1 stream be called to deal with the matter of clearing the creek.—Adopted. The reserves sub-committee reported having inspected the Soldiers’ Memorial Park, and that the cost of fencing for the purpose of protecting trees proposed to be planted on the river banks would ! be £123 15s, and the cost of planting a hedge around the building £77. and that 13,000 plants would be required.—Adopt-' ed. Cr. Bridger objected to the sub-com-mittee having full power to cut off and plant a hedge round the soldiers’ memorial park. Tie maintained that the council should have a voice in the matter. . To this Cr. Clement suggested that | the council should go in a body and I view the proposed plan of fencing and ’ offer any suggestion as to improvement, j The sub-committee were ultimately • given power to go on with the work. ’ At a special meeting of the council, it was resolved to pledge a_ special rate
for further loan for the new gas-holder. BOWLING CLUB BALL. There was onlj’ a poor attendance at the Bowling Club ball last evening, the reason, no doubt, being that other attractions had kept the crowd away. The excellent supper arrangements were in the hands of the Bowling Club ladies, assisted by members of the Croquet Club. Messrs. T. StannerS) and Holder madn I efficient M.’sC., while the music was supplied by Mrs. Bianchi’s orchestra.
