A GREAT FRIESIAN.

RECORD COW AT MANGATOKI, A wonderful record is at present be* ing made by a Friesian cow Alcartral Clothilde Pietje, owned by Mr. Vernon Marx, of Mangatoki. It is as yet too early to predict what the completed record will be, but tit is confidently expected that it will exceed one thousand pounds of butter-fat for the year, in which case she will be the first oow ofl any breed in New Zealand to accomplish thia feat. That high hopes and expectations are nob without foundation will be shown by her performance up to date as authenticated by the New Zealand Department of Agricub ture. Under semi-official test hex

Six and a half .. 197 19,583.0 717.10 To reach the thousand pound mark sh 6 will therefore have to produce 283 lb. of fat in the remaining 168 days, which should be well within hey power, as she is still giving over 901 b. of milk daily. She already 1 ' has one very fine performance to her credit, being on test two years ago when she produced 22,011 lb. of milk and 8421 b. of fat in the year; for ten months of which she had the use of only three quarters. In addition to being such a marvellous producer she is a show coW of unusual merit, having won championship honors at many recent shows, her latest triumph being the winning of the North Island Championship at the last Stratford show.

Aicartra Clothilde Pietje was bred by Mr. Newton King, and was sold at Mr. King’s dispersal sale as a three-year-old heifer, when she was purchased by Mr. T. Sulzberger, from whom she was lately bought by her present owner. This great cow can in no way be colled a freak of breeding, for she is rich in the blood of such great producing Frieaians as Westmere Princess Pieterje (9391 b. fat as a four-year-ol<f); her daughter, Pontiac Princess (8311 b. fat), who is again on test and may do 9001 b, fat; Netherland Princess IV., one-time world’s champion senior two-year-old with 8051 b. fat; Oakwood Rambler (820 lb. fat); Fayne Segis Galatea' (7801 b. fat); Monovale Queen Bess (7401 b. fat as a junior two-year-old); and many more who have records exceeding 700 lb. of butter-fat for the year. Friesian* are verily proving mighty leaders in the campaign for increased production —Statford Post.
