Mr. W. A. Sheat, of Hawera, was yesterday admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court by Mr. Justice Reed, on the motion of Mr. O’Dea.

A Sydney cable announces the death of Mr. J. A. Pollock, professor of physics at Sydney University. Sergeant-Major A. E. Sharpe, of the Defence Department’s staff at Palmerston North, has been transferred to New Plymouth.

Mr. Begg’s candidature for Dunedin North has been approved by the executive of the United Party in the Liberal interest. The other candidates will be Messrs. Clark (Reform) and Munro (Labour).

A Blenheim message reports the death of Mr. W. Griffiths, aged 80, a very old settler, prominent for many years in local politics, and a prominent Freemason. He was Grand Master for New Zealand in 1910-12, and represented the Grand Lodge several times on his periodical visits to England. He was the father of Mr. E. Griffiths, of New Ply* mouth.

Brigadier-General B. C. Fryberg V.C., C.M.G., D. 5.0., was on May 3 made a Doctor of Laws of St Andrew’s University, Scotland, and was capped m the company of Admiral of the Fleet, Sir Roslyn Wemyss, and others. He will be married next month to the Hon. MrsMcLaren, sister of Mrs. Reginald McKenna, whose husband was for some years First Lord of the Admiralty. Bro. W. R. Gahagan, of Christchurch, Grand Master of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows (New Zealand branch) who is on a visit to the Taranaki district, was in New Plymouth yesterday. This evening there will be a large gathering of Oddfellows at Eltham, when Bro. Gahagan will be accorded a welcome on behalf of the lodges in the Taranoki district.
