The Daily News. THURSDAY, MAY 25, 1922. THE GROWTH OF COMMUNISM.

When recently referring to the growth of Communism, Sir George Fuller (Premier of New South Wales), said that determined, insidious and systematic attempts were being made to destroy the elements in national life which made the British Empire a power for world good, adding that the foundations of the national structure were being eaten by a malignant growth, which must be eradicated. Communism is in reality more a theory than a system. It provides for an equitable division of labor, hut that part of the programme is generally kept out of sight. Although many experiments have been made, even in modified Communism, they have all failed, as fail they must when the acid test of national existence is applied. In these days, when civilisation is supposed to have exercised a restraining influence on the predatory nature of mankind, there is no more certain way of recurring to primitive methods than by Communism. That is why it is regarded as a theory which can never be successfully put into practice. In reality Communism has come to be another name for rebellion of the worst kind, because it works as an unseen force, creates disaffection and eventually affords an excuse for outbreaks of lawlessness and serious upheavals. It will be noted, though probably with some surprise, that the latest attempt of Communists to raise the red flag and set up a Government save the mark—of their own, has iust taken place in Bulgaria. It is a matter of history that the ancient Bulgarians lived in war and for war. The present generation have still red blood in tneir veins, and no inconsiderable penchant for cruelty and avarice. There is not the slightest doubt that what the authors of the rising are after is plunder and excitement. It can readily be believed that no permanent success will be theirs, merely the initial sensation, and then the people will assert themselves for their own security. Now that the Balkans’ nations are settling down to an era of peace which has been denied them for many years, the presence of a monstrosity like a communistic regime in Bulgaria is out of all reason. It is worthy of note that in the reign of the first King Boris. Christianity was established in Bulgaria, and that it has been left to a King of the same name to seek flight from a Communistic rabble. The wheel of Time discloses wonderful changes.
