FOOTBALL.
THE RUGBY GAME. A SENIOR TLAY-OIT, HAWiERA (14) V, OPUNAKE (14), The play-off between Hawera and Opunake was played at Kaponga yesterday in fine weather and before a large crowd. The game ended in a draw. Although Hawera showed more combination than their opponents, who were good in the loose, Opunake were the favorites with the large crowd present, and enthusiasm ran high whenever they gained an advantage during the game, the result of which was in doubt to the end. The game was fast, and provided a good exhibition of football. From the kick-off Opunake at once set up a strong attack, and a hard tussle took place in Hawera's twentyfive. Whittington secured and found touch well down the line, and from the throw-out Harton gathered up the ball from loose play and scored a try within five minutes of the start. Wilkinson kicked a good goal. The Hawera van followed up fast from the halfway and again had their opponents on their goal-line playing hard to stem the attack, but Day was too quick and fell on the ball close to the goal posts. Owing to the ball being allowed to touch ground the kick at goal was not allowed. 'Hie Opunake forwards set up a. strong attack, and a hard struggle ensued dose to Hawera’s line, where O’Brien got over. Lusk converted. The game was now fast and open, and swayed to and fro across •the field with no great advantage to either side. Presently J. Day gathered up smartly and scored a good try. West failed with the kick. The Opunake forwards were now playing a great game, and O'Brien again scored in the corner. The kick was from a difficult angle and just missed. At. half-time the score was: Hawera 11, Opunake 8. On changing over Opunake made the pace, and the play was mostly among -the forwards. The ball came out to Rye, who, by a good dodgy run, scored. The kick failed. The score was now 11 all. Then an Opunake forward got off-side and West, from a handy position, kicked a goal, giving Hawera a three points lead. Later a Hawera player was offside and Lusk, made no mistake with the kick. The game ended:— Hawera 14 Opunake 14 Dlr. G. Meuli refereed. HAWERA V. WANGANUI BANKS.
