ASSOCIATION GAME. NEW PLYMOUTH v. MAKALLA CADEIS. The above teams met on the Pukekura sports ground yesterday. The day was an ideal one for football, and there was an attendance of over 400. This, in view of the coming big match with the Australians, is very encouraging, and the excellence of the game put up yesterday should go a long way towards popularising "Soccer” in New Plymouth. The play was interesting all through, both sides playing hard to win, and the final result of no score was a fair indication of the equal merits of the teams. From the kick off New Plymouth made the pace willing, and forced two consecutive corner kicks, which proved fruitless, although Woodhead narrowly missed scoring. Give and take play followed, and H. Woodhead had hard luck in not scoring with a. beautiful header, the Makalla goal-keeper (Betts) saving well. He played a good game all through. On crossing over the ship’s team showed decided improvement, and were dangerous on several occasions. Johnston (the New Plymouth goal-keeper) had some very narrow escapes, but, like his vis-a-vis, he was in good form. Both sides appeared to have left their shooting boots at home, as all the attempts to score were very wide of the mark. Fitzgerald (New Plymouth’s crack forward) had unfortunately to play back instead of in his usual position of centre forward. This re-arrangement made a decided difference. Butler, who was playing well for the “ship,” caused some excitement by double somersaulting over the local keeper’s hack. The fast pace in the first half began to show its effects towards the latter stages, the New Plymouth players especially showing signs of distress, but they all stuck to it well and did their best. For the Makalla all the forwards played well, Gardner and Butler being worthy of special mention. Mr. Geo. Roper officiated as referee. After the match the visitors were entertained at tea at the Hygienic.
