Paul Cambon and Count Beaupoil de Saint-Aulaire, post and present French Ambassadors, were entertained at luncheon by the House of Commons. Mr. Chamberlain, in toasting the guests, said they had assembled to reaffirm the friendship between the two countries, which had made common sacrifices and .which had left scars on aR hearts that would be remembered, for
generations. “We must,” said Mr. Chamberlain, “have our differences of opinion as our interests differed. Let anyone having influence in either coun< try resolve to seek to see through thd surface difficulties to the profound deriying unity. Let us use our influ* ence to remove misunderstandings, aafll determine to find a friendly eotatiott of all our differences. lam not sure that M. Cambon and I do not belong to Sc generation that is passing away. I haw a suspicion that M. Cambon still Hkeu the old diplomacy, with its reticence, silence, and careful avoidance of the limelight of th? Press. So do I. I wish it were given us still to live in a world where those quiet ways satisfied the needs of the times. Whatever place there might be in the future for new methods, there would olwaya bei room for the older rHpkim irtu-* 2 Cable Assn.
