TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa”.) Concluding day at Wanganui. A lot of punters are waiting for Kato. Tick Omahu off for a win at Ellerslie. Oak Rose paid nearly a score at Wanganui. Coalition ran a nice race for a half-ready horse on Thursday. Whizz Bang won the Kaltoke Hurdles decisively, and is worth following. Kinsem won the Borough Handicap pulling up, and paid a false price. Calma is in his class in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Otaki. Orchid looked like winning the Borough Handicap by a street, but she stopped to a walk in the straight. I,end me a gun, quickly I I’m after the : chap who persuaded me that the Aucklander; Poanui, could not '‘stay” 2% miles. Omahu knocked himself out by pulling hard : In the early stages of the Wanganui Steeples. ‘ with a faster pace he would have strolled in. Maxnueteur and Volo have been nominated for the Raukawa Cup at Otaki, and Crossfire, Leithfield and Rational for the principal sprints. Weights for forthcoming meetings are due as follows: Dunedin, to-day; Auckland (minor events), Monday ; Otaki, Tuesday. Kipling and Vigilo are regularly hunted with the Manawatu hounds, and both should make' their presence felt in hunters’ races this winter. H. Gray rode his first winner this (English) racing season when he steered Thoughtless to victory in the Victoria Spring Handicap at Lingfield, on March 30. Penury Rose and Sir Wai are regular schooling coinpanions at Opaki, but Sir Roseberry, in the same stable, has been turned out for a spell. Chrysostom, with Stan. Reid in the saddle, finished third in a field of eleven in the Hurdles at Williamstown on May 6, being only two lengths behind the winner. Chrysostom carried 10.7. An Auckland scribe states that Royal Fancy is not much good. Those who saw the imported filly in action on the second day at Hawera will not subscribe to that opinion. "Billy” Dwyer is having an unlucky spin with Cochineal. There is no doubt about the All Red filly’s pace, but she is a bleeder in more senses than on'e. The principal flat races at Wanganui on Thursday fell to the progeny of Autumnus, Kinsem being by Autumnus—Nicotine, and Printemps by Autumnus—Rene. The Kemball team, including Gladful, Tenterfleld, Missgold, Bonetter and Weldone, have been freely entered at Dunedin, so it does not appear as if the former pair are intended for Ellerslie next month. Hlpo and Blackmail were caught in the tapes at the start of the Borough Handicap at Wanganui, and Blackmail and Comic fell at the three-furlongs post. Rational, who drew No. 1, did not get the smoothest of passages. Maniahera made a promising debut over country in the Wanganui Steeples, and looked to have a chance until he tired, half a mile j from home. He was well licked* when he i sprawled over at the last fence. Opinions differ as to how Sir Solo. Would have fared if he had got round without mishap j in the big race at Wanganui. He was right up with the leaders for two miles, jumping splendidly, but a simple fence—the second of the brush double—settled him. Poanui and Whanoko made all the running in the Century Hurdles, but half a mile from home the Aucklander had the race In safe keeping. Spook then came fast, but had no show of catching Poanui. Alteration ran a surprisingly good race, and Gladful also showed improvement. However, Poanui could have carried another stone, and beaten that crowd. Printemps made every’ post a winner in the Connolly, and it was just as well for him that he did, for Marqueteur came with a slashing run in the straight, and just failed to reach him. Marqueteur’s performance under 9.11 was a great one. Scion and Tame Fox, who carried the bulk of the investments on the machine, were both well placed in the early stages, and were beaten on their merits. Mort Avis was a strong tip for the Purua Hack Handicap, for which twenty lined up. /tunning along the back he forged into third place, and at the distance ran to the front and scored nicely, fie paid a good price for a first favorite. Kohu ran a good race in the Wanganui Steeples, and after rushing to the front (unwisely, it appeared) going along the back the last time, failed to sustain the pace, and dropped back into third place, a neck behind Omahu (second). Kohu should pay his way over the big fences this season. Mort Avis was the only favorite to win on Thursday, but Rational, Omahu, Simonides and Spook returned second dividends. Oak Rose was the extreme outsider of the seven contestants in the Hack Steeples, and good prices were handled by the backers of Kinsem, Khartoum, Whizz Bang, Poanui, Printemps and Merry Queen (second). When Sir Solo turned a flip In the Wanganui Steeples, two of his backers let out howls of anguish. “He took off too far,” ventured one. "Took off too far?” walled his companion, "I should think he did. He ■ took off before the blanky nominations closed.' According to ‘‘Pilot”, of the Sydney Referee, H. Telford asked Jockster J. Pike to stand down, after being engaged to ride Solfanelio in the Doncaster, the reason being that Telford had heard something to Pike’s discredit. The A.J.C. committee promptly carpeted -Telford, and the latter, being unable to substantiate his suspicions, was fined a tenner. On Thursday’s running. Whizz Bang, Merry Queen, Rational, Khartoum and Whanoko should show up in their next engagements. Although there was a big crowd at Wanganui on Thursday, the betting was poor, and the tote again "slumped" badly., only £27,326 being put through. This is very poor for a place the size of Wanganui, and the sports simply have not got the money—that is evident.
