The New Zealand Ugbrooke clip brought top price 22d, average 20d. Tallow.—;Casks offered, 1584 ; 249 were sold at sixpence to a shilling decline. Mutton, fine 40s 6d, medium 36s 6d; beef, 40s 6d and 365. Wheat cargoes are firm, in sympathy with America. The Bellfield cargo is quoted at 57s 9d, those by the Dumfries, Faxen and Toromeo at 58s. Three thousand tons ex Talawa at 58s o%d; a parcel at Liverpool ex Trevithic at 57s o%d. TIN PLATE TRADE RECOVERING. London, May 17. The iin plate industry is improving. A prominent manufacturer says that South Wales for some months has been turning out 60 to 70 per cent, of their capacity. There is every prospect that this will be maintained. South Wales is recovering the Canadian market, which was lost to Americans before the war. All the old customers are retained except those in Central Europe, which is not buying. THE NATIONAL BANK. London, May 18. The National Bank of New Zealand is issuing the first 100,000 of the new shares at £7 10s apiece, of which £2 10s is called up. The price of issue is 90. The shares are offered to shareholders in the proportion of one new share to every four held. The premium on the shares will be carried to the reserve fund. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.

THE APPLE TRADE. ADVERTISING COLONIAL FRUIT. Received May 19, 5.5 p.m. London, May 18. A meeting of the National Federation of Fruit Trade Associations discussed a variety of matters affecting tl:e apple trade. It was decided to address complaints to the ship- [ owners and the Port o» London authority regarding the slow discharge. The meeting api pointed a sub-committee to confer with In- ! surance brokers to try and find an equit- ! able basis for fixing an average for sound jvalue of each shipment. : The meeting also discussed a proposal to I popularise Australian and New Zealand apples in London and the principal provincial cities by means of pictorial posters, at a cost of £660 for one monk. It was suggested that all receivers should charge a. halfpenny per case on account sales to meet the cost. LONDON WOOL SALES. Received May 19, 5.5 p.m. London, May 18. At the wool sales there was a poor selection, but good home competition. All qualities were sold at full rates. Tre sales close to-morrow. New Zealand "Belfast” brought 20%d. Bradford is firm and unchanged, users being cautious owing to high prices. THE POULTRY MARKET. Messrs. Nolan and Co. report that at their mart yesterday the following prices were obtained: Cockerels 2s lOd to 4s, small Is 9d to 2s 9d; hens, 2s 7d to 6s 6d; pullets, 3s 9d to Ils; bantauns, 2s 4d; ducks, 2s to 2s 9d.
