TRAGIC FIRE.
BLAZE IN HOSPITAI. PANIC AMONG PATIENTS. A NUMBER DEAD. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rome, May 18. The Hospital of the Holy Ghost has been gutted by fire. The staffs removed as many patients as could be accommodated on the stretchers available. Thus far 19 bodies have been removed. Received May 19, 7.30 pan. Rome, May 19. The Hospital of Santo Spirito was one of the most famous and largest charities in the world. It had been in course of erection since the time of Pope Innocent the Third. The library and museum were most valuable. The fire was due to a short circuit starting a fire in the laundry, of which the ancient wooden floor and ceiling were quickly ablaze. There was a panic amongst the 800 patients when the floor of the room, occupied by the chronic patients fell in and dense smoke filled the corridors. The doctors and nurses did their best, but they were able to do little in the darkness. Most of the victims were between 50 and 70 years old. The rest of the patients were carried into the courtyards, and lay on improvised beds until the fire was extinguish-ed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
