THE STARVING RUSSIANS.
THE CRISIS NOT OVER. HELP STILL REQUIRED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A Press Association cablegram appeared. on the 16th inst. in which it was stated that the Russian famine crisis was over. For confirmation or otherwise of this statement Mr. W. H. Rose (chairman of the Save the Children Fund) sent the following cablegram to the London Committee: “A London Press Association telegraph announces that the Russian crisis is over; reply immediately.” To-day he received a reply from Lord Weardale, which reads: “The statement is absolutely untrue. Sir Benjamin Robertson says the famine conditions must remain until the harvest is gathered. Even if the harvest is successful considerable distress will still remain and if the harvest is a failure the present position will still obtain. Famine conditions are spreading in Russia. All other statements. however circumstantial, are pure fabrications. We are feeding three hundred thousand children and beg you to do your utmost to keep the kitchens going.”
