NAVAL DEFENCE.
NEW ZEALAND’S SHARE. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, May Iff. The Minister of Defence (Sir R. H. Rhodes) said he was unable to account for the reference to the “New Zealand hint.” His statement to the correspond-' ent of a London newspaper had been that New Zealand had received no intimation from the Imperial Government tliat it desired New Zealand to increase her contribution, but if such an intimation were received it would receive fav- " ourable consideration. He had explained at the same time that recently New Zealand’s naval contribution had been more than doubled, as the Dominion, in | place of making a monetary contribu- " tion of £lOO,OOO. had undertaken the maintenance of H.M.S. Chatham and H.M.S. Philomel. This was in addition to payments in respect of the battlecruiser H.MJS New Zealand.
