ROWING.

THE HENLEY REGATTA RULES. MELBOURNE CREW AFFECTED. By Telegraph.—Press A»h.—Copyright. Received May 17, 9.30 p.m. London, May 16. Apropos of the application of the Melbourne champion eight to compete at the Henley regatta, it is pointed out that the rules oC the Amateur Rowing Association bar membership of mechanics, artisans, laborers, and all persons employed in menial duties. One Henley steward explains that the reo gatta committee is not bound by the rules of the association, and the Australians’ ap-< nlicntion will receive most just consideration. The association’s rules are framed only because those who earn ttelr livelihood by muscular effort have an unfair advantage over the ordinary amateur. The Evening Standard, referring to the Australian application to row at Henley, points out that the Amateur Rowing Association’s rule is quite specific, and unless it Is waived, the application cannot be accepted. It Is unlikely it will be waived.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. A cablegram from Adelaide yesterday ed: The committee appointed to send the Murray Bridge Rowing Crew to England t® compete at the Henley regatta, decided first to cable the English Association to discover If it was a fact that the crew, being artisans, would be disqualified in accordance with the rules of English rowing.
