Orders for papers may also be left with him. / MUSICAL SOCIETY. THE ANNUAL REPORT. May 13. The annual report of the Stratford Musical Society, to be presented to the annual meeting on Monday night, states (inter alia), that the year has been a very successful one. The subscribing members number 55. The largest number of performing members during the season was 48, and at present stands at 43. There is room for improvement in active membership. The best thanks of the society are due to both the Egmont Club Orchestra and local instrumentalists who assisted at the concerts. The society has a very fine collection of music on hand, and is indebted to the Methodist Church Choir for many copies used, during the season. The library account stands at £2O 12s lOd, but the actual value far exceeds that sum. Socially the year has been very successful. Members have derived a great amount of pleasure from rehearsals and concerts. The thanks of the committee are due to the social committee who arranged two very successful dances during the year. The finances are in a fair condition, considering that this is the society’s first year. The thanks of the society are due to the conductor, Mr. V. Lester, who has proved untiring in his efforts to further the interests of the society. Thanks were due to the pianist, Miss Moon, whose efficient efforts have played no small part in bringing the ;o ciety to its present satisfactory position. The work of the librarian, Mr. D. McAllister, also deserves special mention and thanks, as his work has always been found up to the mark.
LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT. Mr. W. Blennerhassett had a very lucky escape from a seri'ous accident at the Lear Street level crossing this morning. As the mailtrain left the Stratford station, south-bound, Blennerhassett attempted to cross the line with a horse and cart, but the engine struck the horse, severely gashing it behind the shoulder and on the fetlock. Beyond this, no serious damage was done. Mr. Blennerhassett states that he did not see or hear the train until it was upon him, yet there is little to obstruct the view for some distance up the line. LADIES’ GOLF MEETING. A meeting of the ladies of the Stratford Golf Club was held in the Parish Hall yesterday, for the purpose of arranging matters in the ladies’ section for the coming year. Mesdames Abraham, Budge, Curtis, Glasgow, Burmester, and Malone were appointed an executive committee, and Mesdames Copping (convenor), Malone, Riera, Richard, Kay and Coleman an afternoon tea committee.
The following new members were elected: Misses Hall, M. Wright, N. Pratt, Knight. Young, Porritt, Hodgens, H. Penn, and Mrs. Furrie. Misses Niven and Copping and Miss L. Webstey weer re-elected. GENERAL ITEMS. The Stratford Card Club journeyed to Te Popo last night, and secured a victory over the latter bhjb by one game.
