DAVIS CUP CONTEST.
THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM. AN ENTHUSIASTIC TRIO. Sydney, April 26. The Davis Cup team has left for England, en route to America, full of hope o-f winning through to the challenge round. Patterson, the captain of the team, said, in a farewell interview: “We are going away with a feeling of confidence. but I do not wish our supporters to think we are anticipating no difficulty in getting through the preliminary rounds. We have to heat Belgium, France, and either of the British Isles or Japan before earning the right to meet America, and all of these countries are well represented. I think we ought to beat them, but I do not want the public to think that we are cocksure. Once in the challenge round anything might happen. T can only say that the Australian representatives will go on to the court as fit as possible, and absolutely determined to do their best.” The two other members of the team were no less enthusiastic. “It is going to be a great experience,” said J. O. Anderson. “In my opinion the best possible team has been picked to represent Australia. With any ordinary luck we ought to get into the challenge round all right, and if we do you can rest assured that there will be a splendid game. It is very hard luck on Hawkes that the association cannot afford to send four representatives.” “We are going to leave absolutely no stone unturned in our efforts to bring back the cup with us when we return in October.” said P. O’Hara Wood. “T feel it a great honor to be included in an international team, and especially in a team like this. We may have some hard matches in the preliminary rounds, but with any luck I think we ought to win through to the challenge.”
